Texas Nominee for National Superintendent of the Year
Paying Tribute to the Talent & Vision of School Leaders
To be eligible for AASA’s National Superintendent of the Year awards program, a Texas superintendent must first be selected by TASA as Texas’ nominee. TASA traditionally nominates the superintendent who is awarded that year’s Texas Superintendent of the Year honors by the Texas Association of School Boards.
2026 Texas Nominee is Named 2026 National Superintendent of the Year!
Lamar CISD Superintendent and TASA President-Elect Roosevelt Nivens, Ed.D., has been named the 2026 National Superintendent of the Year®, an award given by AASA, The School Superintendents Association, making him the first Texas superintendent in 25 years — and the second ever — to receive top honors in the nation!
Eligibility & Selection Process
Any AASA Affiliate Association State Superintendent of the Year® who plans to continue in the profession may be nominated for AASA National Superintendent of the Year, which recognizes the outstanding leadership of active, front-line superintendents. It is not recognition of service at retirement or a program to reward current state or national leaders.
State Level
Each year by November 1, TASA selects a Texas superintendent to be Texas’ nominee for AASA National Superintendent of the Year. TASA traditionally nominates the superintendent who is awarded that year’s Texas Superintendent of the Year honors by the Texas Association of School Boards at the TASA/TASB Convention.
National Level
A national panel of judges selects four finalists for AASA National Superintendent of the Year from the pool of state nominees based on the written applications and letters of recommendation.
The panel interviews the four finalists in Washington D.C. to select the AASA National Superintendent of the Year, who is named during the AASA National Conference on Education.
