AUSTIN – The Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) has announced the selection of Dr. Kevin Brown as the association’s new executive director starting July 1, following the June 30 retirement of Johnny L. Veselka, who has served TASA as executive director for 32 years.
The superintendent of Alamo Heights ISD since 2008, Brown is the immediate past president of TASA and chair of the TASA 2025 Task Force, a diverse group of TASA members from across the state who have developed a long-range plan to ensure TASA’s continued success and align association operations with the vision for public education that TASA has championed since 2008. The TASA Strategic Framework was officially launched at the 2018 TASA Midwinter Conference in January.
“Kevin Brown is deeply committed to ensuring that TASA remains dynamic and responsive while focusing on advocacy, engagement and professional learning,” said search committee chair Charles Dupre, superintendent of Fort Bend ISD. “He spoke extensively to the value of membership engagement, and he has creative ideas to ensure that TASA remains engaged with districts that are not in close proximity to major urban areas. The committee is confident that Brown’s leadership will continue TASA’s legacy of excellence.”
Brown holds a doctorate in education administration from Texas A&M University, a master’s degree in education administration from Texas State University, and a bachelor’s degree in government with honors from The University of Texas at Austin.
He began his 27-year career in Texas public education as a social studies teacher in Southwest ISD and continued at McNeil High School in Round Rock ISD. He served in New Braunfels ISD as an assistant principal and principal at both the elementary and secondary levels. Brown joined Alamo Heights ISD in 2000 as director of personnel and public information. He has taught graduate courses at Texas State University and guest lectured at Trinity University.
In addition to his leadership roles with TASA, Brown has served as the president of the Texas School Coalition, as a member of the Legislative Council for the University Interscholastic League, and as a member of the Steering Committee for the Go Public Campaign in Bexar County. He has served on the executive board of the Texas Association of Mid-Size Schools, board of directors for the Alamo Heights Rotary Club, as past president of the San Antonio Association of Personnel Administrators, and on the executive board of the Texas Association of School Personnel Administrators.
Brown is a passionate advocate for public education and believes that quality teachers and a supportive community are critical components to the success of children and to the continued success of our democratic way of life.
