Texas Speaker of the House Dade Phelan announced Monday the creation of a new Select Committee on Educational Opportunity and Enrichment, noting it was done with “a special session on education matters all but certain.”
The select committee will be composed of the following 15 members of the House:

Harold Dutton
James Frank
Cody Harris
Cole Hefner
Gina Hinojosa
Ken King
Oscar Longoria
Will Metcalf
Matt Shaheen
James Talarico
Gary VanDeaver
Phelan said that the committee will begin working immediately to develop a “workable roadmap for legislation in the House.” It is charged with making recommendations for:
- Ensuring all Texas youths enjoy equal educational opportunity and the freedom to obtain a quality education, regardless of circumstance
- Improving outcomes for Texas public school students and meaningfully supporting educators and educational institutions
- Modernizing assessment and accountability measures for Texas schools educating K-12 students
