On Monday, October 9, Sen. Brandon Creighton, chair of the Senate Education Committee, filed SB 2, which includes the following:
- Provides for a one-time Teacher Retention Payment for this school year that will be considered a bonus payment and extended after this school year as an ongoing salary increase (Teacher Retention Allotment). Districts with fewer than 5,000 students would receive $10,000 per year and school districts with more than 5,000 students would receive $3,000 per teacher.
- Increases the Basic Allotment of $75 – from $6,160 to $6,235 – and eliminates the requirement that a percentage be spent on staff compensation.
- Increases the School Safety Allotment from $10 to $20 and increases the campus allotment from $15,000 to $30,000 per campus.
- Provides an additional $1.196 billion from General Revenue in addition to the approximate $4 billion appropriated by the Legislature during the regular session that was left unspent when no school finance bill passed.
Testimony was taken and the bill passed out of committee. The bill is expected to be debated in the Senate later this week.
