Prior to the October 4, 2019, State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) meeting, nine education-related organizations signed on to TASA’s written public testimony. Collectively, the 10 organizations represent school administrators and school trustees in small, rural, mid-size, suburban, and urban school districts.
We expressed concerns about an agenda item relating to “good cause” for educator contract abandonment that could have allowed a teacher to abandon his or her contract for any reason without receiving a sanction.
SBEC members Dr. Art Cavazos, Harlingen CISD superintendent, and Dr. John Kelly, Pearland ISD superintendent, supported our recommendation to strike the proposed addition to good cause factors, noting the detrimental effects for students left in classrooms without a teacher. Other SBEC members concurred, and the board voted to strike the subjective language from proposed rule.
