About Me
I served Texas public schools for more than 41 years and retired from public education in 2023 after serving as the superintendent of schools in Hutto ISD for six years. Currently I serve as the executive director of the Texas Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (TALAS), as an executive coach for TASA, and as an instructor for the ESC Region 13 Superintendent Certification Program.
As superintendent of Hutto ISD, I organized and garnered enough community support to pass two of the largest bonds in the district’s history to keep up with growth demands. Hutto ISD is the fourth fastest growing district in Central Texas. During my tenure at Hutto ISD, the district not only expanded and upgraded facilities, we increased the number of dual language campuses, expanded CTE and fine arts programs, and increased college and career pathway opportunities.
I have dedicated my work in public schools to honor my father, a former migrant worker and successful businessman who has influenced and supported me throughout my life. I have always been committed to ensuring equitable access, closing achievement gaps, instilling high expectations, and raising academic achievement for all students, especially those from disadvantaged situations.
I am originally from the Rio Grande Valley, where I earned my undergraduate and master’s degrees at Pan American University at Brownsville (now UTRGV). Later, I earned my doctorate through the Cooperative Superintendency Program at The University of Texas at Austin.
I am married to Michael Lee Thomas and have six grown children (two sons who served in the military and three daughters who are teachers), 10 grandchildren, and two dogs. We enjoy hiking, country western dancing, visiting historic dance halls across Texas, and working on our second home in Centerville, Texas.
I believe in the power of professional growth and personal development. My coaching approach is a blend of self-awareness, reflection, and small doses of guidance that lead clients/mentees toward pathways of sustainable growth and fulfillment, not only for themselves but their respective organizations.
