Executive Coach Working with New and Experienced Leaders and Teams
Fulshear, TX
About Me
I am a veteran professional educator of more than 40 years. I retired in 2016 after serving as superintendent of Katy ISD for nine years. I also served as superintendent of the DeSoto ISD and Cincinnati Public Schools in Ohio. After retiring, I returned to my hometown of Nacogdoches, Texas, in 2018 to serve as interim superintendent of Nacogdoches ISD until 2020.
Currently, I serve TASA not only as an executive coach, but also as an executive superintendent.
Growing up poor inspired me to work in the field of education, because education opened doors for me and changed my life. I wanted to give to others the kind of support I received through education, so I began my career working with special needs and elementary aged students in Baytown, Texas.
With a sister who worked as a teacher, and a close friend who worked as a school principal, I got firsthand insight into how teachers need administrative support to be able to do their best. That awareness led me into school administration, with the goal of supporting as many teachers as possible so they could turn around and help more students succeed. I served as a building principal and in various central office positions in Spring Branch ISD in Houston, Texas.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and master’s degree in Educational Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. I received my superintendent certification from the University of Texas at Tyler.
It has been my honor to hold a number of elected leadership positions, including president of TASA, president of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, president of the Urban Superintendents Association of America (USAA), president of the Texas Association of Suburban/Mid-Urban Schools TAS-MUS, and chairman of the University Interscholastic League Legislative Council. I’m also a past chair of the Stephen F. Austin University Board of Regents.
My passion is to help school district leaders and communities work together on behalf of their schools.
