LaTonya Goffney, superintendent of the Aldine ISD, was sworn in July 8, 2025, as the 2025-26 president-elect of AASA, The School Superintendents Association. The installation ceremony was held in conjunction with AASA’s Legislative Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.
“I fully recognize the immense opportunity and responsibility that this position entails — indeed, to whom much is given, much is required,” said Goffney in a post on social media. “I look forward to supporting our current president, David Law, and to collaborating closely with the AASA officers, executive committee, governing board, staff, and our 13,000 educational leaders both across the country and internationally. United, we will fulfill the Public Education Promise.”
Goffney served as TASA’s 2023-24 president and was TASA’s first female African American president. (Read more about her on page 62 of the TASA Centennial Commemorative Magazine.) She was the 2017 Texas Superintendent of the Year and Texas’ nominee for 2018 National Superintendent of the Year.
“I’m really proud of LaTonya and this new leadership role as president of AASA,” said TASA Executive Director Kevin Brown. “She has demonstrated exceptional leadership at every level. Her accomplishment reflects well on our state and will make a positive impact at the national level.”
In addition to her leadership in TASA, Goffney has held leadership positions in the National Alliance of Black School Educators, Texas Association of Suburban/Midsize Schools, Texas Leadership Center, Texas Council of Women School Executives, and other education-related organizations. She has also represented Texas as a member of the AASA Governing Board.
