Long-time TASA Executive Director Johnny L. Veselka, who is retiring this spring, was honored by the TASA officers and Executive Committee during the opening general session of the 2018 TASA Midwinter Conference in Austin on Monday.
During the presentation, TASA President Buck Gilcrease announced that the Executive Committee had voted to name the TASA headquarters building in Austin in honor of Veselka, who has served the association for more than 43 years. The officers presented Veselka with a plaque that will hang in the building.
Veselka has served as TASA’s executive director since 1986, and has been part of the TASA staff since 1974.
“I will always value the personal and professional relationships that I have developed over the years through TASA,” Veselka said. “I’m proud that TASA has built a formidable reputation as an advocate for Texas public schools, the 5.2 million children we serve, and for TASA members.”
Veselka says that he is most proud of TASA’s mission to develop leaders who create student-centered schools and develop future-ready students. Among the highlights of his career has been “witnessing the passion of TASA members across the state who are committed to transforming the learning opportunities for the students they serve.”
A video honoring Veselka was also shown during the presentation.
