With the exit of five Texas Senate members, including four committee chairs, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has named new chairs to lead standing and new interim select committees.
The chairs serving on the interim select committees will remain in their positions through the 2027 legislative session, as the select committees will be made permanent standing committees when the 90th Legislature convenes in January 2027.
In addition, Patrick has assigned senators to fill vacancies on several standing committees. These committee assignments are for the remainder of the 2026 interim.
The Senate Education Committee, formerly K-12 and higher education combined, has been split into two separate committees. With the departure of Sen. Brandon Creighton to serve as chancellor of Texas Tech University, Patrick has named Sen. Paul Bettencourt as chair of the Senate Committee on Higher Education and Sen. Donna Campbell as chair of the Senate Committee on Education (K-12).
